IP Portfolio Management

Over Twenty Years of Intellectual Property Experience & Excellence

IP portfolio management

Scope Of Services

While every client starts with a first patent grant or trademark registration or some other form of intellectual property (IP) right, many go on to build large and successful IP portfolios.

It is important to remember IP portfolios and rights are more than just inventions and brands.

A house may be made of individual bricks and mortar, but together those bricks and mortar make a home.

Part of what we do is manage these portfolios for our clients.

Whether one patent application and grant, or sixty trademark applications and grants, our job is to manage and monitor IP portfolios for all of our clients.

What Is IP Portfolio Management?

Creating and obtaining intellectual property rights is just a first step.

When intellectual property is conceived, it is difficult to immediately appreciate how far that intellectual property will extend.

IP Portfolio management involves not just creating and filing applications.

After applications are filed they must be monitored, examined, prosecuted through a relevant Patent or Trademark Office, and eventually maintained.

This also does not even account for possible enforcement and the issues surrounding enforcement.

How Is An IP Portfolio Managed?

There are at least two very large exercises in intellectual property management.

A first exercise is the actual tracking of applications and grants, including serial numbers, relevant filing dates, and the like.

Another detailed exercise is tracking various due dates for applications in grants, be they in your home jurisdiction or a foreign jurisdiction.

IP Portfolio management also involves more detailed and intricate tasks such as attempting to homogenize intellectual property claims across multiple countries.

Different countries have different rules, procedures, laws, requirements, fee structures, and more.

In an administrative sense, IP portfolio management can be much like tasking soldiers across the world and attempting to simultaneously update and account for them all.

Depending on the size of the IP Portfolio, certain clients will often have designated in-house contact people to assist in client oversight.

Pnc IP Group also provides training for internal employees, where required.

Why Is IP Portfolio Management Critical?

An important aspect to intellectual property is that once you have earned a set of rights, you must then work to maintain those rights.

In this sense intellectual property rights are no different than any other rights – they must be exercised, maintained, and defended in order to be of value.

Part of that value is day-to-day management of an IP portfolio, while another part of that value is long-term management.

We attend to arranging and maintaining both domestic and foreign intellectual property grants, including arranging and prioritizing renewals.

At any given time, our clients are able to acquire from us a detailed picture of where they’ve acquired intellectual property rights, and what those rights mean in a true business context.

Many intellectual property owners do not realize how fast twenty years can pass, and how important maintaining updated rights can be.

Once certain rights lapse, it is often all but too late.

We track our clients’ overall progress not just by individual patent and trademark grants, by also by countries over time.

Our services include budget management, timely reminders for upcoming renewals, and comprehensive analysis to determine whether renewals should take place.

We also offer training for client in-house staff to acquire the portfolio management skills necessary to manage intellectual property portfolios internally.
